As the temperatures start to drop, layering up just goes with the territory. And while I love all the different options out there right now for keeping warm and looking chic at the same time, my favorite kind of layering is tailored. It may sound like a contradiction, but yes, layering can be sleek, depending on the bulk of the pieces you choose. As is the case with my look today, sometimes all it takes is the addition of a belt to keep those layers from swallowing you up. I’m wearing wide leg trousers – a wardrobe staple in my closet all year long – but instead of pairing them with my usual fitted shirt or cropped sweater I’ve opted for the warmth of layers, choosing a crisp, collared shirt under a luxurious slouchy sweater. The addition of my belt grounds the look and lends a structured, feminine feel to it.  A pair of snakeskin platform pumps injects my own unique and unexpected twist.

What’s your feeling about tailored layering? Is it a look you’re loving for fall?
